Metal Gear Online was originally included on the disc for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. A few months after the launch of MGS4, a standalone version of MGO was released alongside the first of many expansion packs. However, the standalone itself does not include the expansion, which must be bought seperatly.

Up to 16 players can battle each other in MGO. Featuring the SOP system from MGS4, MGO allows players to connect to their team mates through their nanomachines and exchange data with each other. Data such as codec messages, team mate locations and team mate status (dead, stunned, distracted by a book, etc). By equipping their character with certain skills, players can also share data on the enemy with their team, leading to a unique online experience.
